Here at Knockout Designs, we were recently presented with a very challenging but also interesting project. Lisa, our customer, loves cows and wanted a cow door knocker for the front door on her beautiful new home in the Berkshires. “Betsy” the cow door knocker, now greets her family and friends when they come to visit or celebrate the holidays. She adds a touch of spunk to the outside of the house, and is a friendly first face to see. She may not be smiling, but her mere presence is enough to welcome everyone in warmly. Cows are herbivores and very loving animals. In the wild, cattle care for their young and watch over calves as they grow up.

We came to the conclusion that black steel would be best for the cow, giving it a rustic, homey look. 3D printed black steel has a grayish-black tone, with a matte finish; perfect for outdoors. The cow’s bell rings AND works as a door knocker. The entire cow door knocker is six inches tall. It features the cow’s profile, bell, and a flat border surrounding the cow, attached to the oversized custom front door.
This design was fun, and also challenging because we had to incorporate multiple complex3D printed parts. We began with a plastic prototype, as we always do for 3D metal-printed hardware, and then made some refinements. Once everything was finalized, we printed the design in metal. We also learned that it is possible to print a plastic ringing bell in one piece. However, our ringing bell had to be two connecting pieces since it was made of metal.
